✅ Does This Course Satisfy the State Requirement?
This course provides 4 approved hours toward the 16 hours Virginia licensed resident insurance agents must complete. It does not satisfy the full requirement on its own, and it does not satisfy the separate 3-hour ethics requirement. You will need additional approved hours, including an approved ethics course, to complete your renewal.
If you hold more than one license category, your requirement is 24 hours rather than 16, with a minimum of eight hours in each category you hold. These 4 hours apply to the Property & Casualty category.
✅ Virginia Continuing Education Requirements
Under Virginia Code § 38.2-1866, an agent licensed in a single license category completes 16 hours of continuing education each biennium. An agent holding licenses in more than one category completes 24 hours, with a minimum of eight credit hours in each category held. Of the total required credits for each biennium, three credit hours must be in insurance ethics, which may include insurance law and regulations applicable in the Commonwealth.
- 16 hours per biennium for a single license category
- 24 hours per biennium for multiple categories, with at least 8 hours in each category held
- 3 of the total credits must be in insurance ethics, which may include Virginia insurance law and regulations
- No more than 75 percent of required credits may come from courses provided by insurance companies or agencies
- Single categories include life and annuities, health, property and casualty, personal lines, and title
Virginia exempts agents licensed during the final 13 months of a two-year period from the requirement for that biennium, under § 38.2-1871. Nonresident agents who meet their home state's requirements and consultants who satisfy the requirement for each license category held are also addressed there. Check your own license record rather than assuming an exemption applies.
How this course helps: This 4-hour course contributes 4 of the 16 credit hours a single-category Virginia agent must complete each biennium, or 4 of the 24 hours required when you hold more than one category. It is approved in the Property & Casualty category, so those hours apply to a Property & Casualty license. It does not satisfy the separate 3-hour ethics requirement, and it does not complete the renewal by itself — the remaining hours and the ethics credits must be completed separately.
✅ When Do Licensees Renew?
Virginia agents renew on a two-year biennium. Confirm your own biennium end date on your license record or renewal notice rather than assuming a statewide calendar deadline. Because the requirement differs depending on how many license categories you hold, the first thing to establish is whether you are a 16-hour or a 24-hour agent — and if you hold more than one category, whether you have the eight-hour minimum in each. An agent who holds two categories and completes 24 hours all in one category has not met the requirement.
✅ How to Renew Your License
- Confirm how many license categories you hold — This determines whether you owe 16 hours or 24. If you hold more than one category, you also owe at least 8 hours in each.
- Check your biennium end date — Confirm it on your license record or renewal notice. Do not assume a statewide calendar deadline.
- Complete the required hours, including 3 in ethics — Ethics may include Virginia insurance law and regulations. Verify the ethics credits specifically.
- Watch the 75 percent sponsorship cap — No more than 75 percent of your required credits may come from courses provided by insurance companies or agencies. Independent provider courses are not subject to that cap.
- Allow provider reporting time — Finish coursework early enough for your completions to post before the biennium closes.
- Renew and confirm — Follow the renewal instructions in your notice, submit the renewal, and verify afterward that your record shows an active status and an updated expiration date.
✅ What You Will Learn
- Explain how homeowners policy form selection drives covered property, covered losses, and underwriting expectations
- Walk a client through Coverages A through F and the residency and occupancy conditions that create avoidable disputes
- Distinguish named-peril from open-peril coverage and describe major exclusions without misrepresenting what is covered
- Explain wind and hail provisions, hurricane deductibles, and roof-related limitations clearly enough to align client expectations
- Apply loss settlement rules — actual cash value versus replacement cost, depreciation, duties after loss — to real claim scenarios
- Discuss coastal windstorm and last-resort placement, catastrophe-driven exposure, and rebuilding cost inflation honestly with property owners
✅ Course Content Overview
Hour 1: Homeowners Policy Forms and Coverage Structure
- Introduce homeowners policy forms and common dwelling policy structures to clarify how policy form selection drives covered property, covered losses, and underwriting expectations.
- Review coverage parts (property and liability) to explain how Coverages A–F (and related provisions) function in real-world losses and claim scenarios.
- Discuss insured location concepts, policy definitions, and residency/occupancy considerations to reduce avoidable coverage disputes tied to who lives there and how the home is used.
- Analyze key declarations items (limits, deductibles, endorsements, mortgagee interest, and rating factors) so agents can confidently interpret what the policy actually provides.
Hour 2: Perils, Exclusions, Deductibles, and High-Impact Endorsements
- Review perils insured and major exclusions to distinguish named-peril vs. open-peril concepts and to prevent misrepresentation of what is and is not covered.
- Explain wind/hail, hurricane deductibles, and roof-related limitations to improve disclosure quality and to align client expectations with common loss drivers.
- Cover water damage, mold/fungi limitations, and common endorsements to clarify frequent dispute areas and the role endorsements play in expanding or restricting coverage.
- Evaluate additional endorsements and options (replacement cost provisions, ordinance or law, scheduled personal property, and identity-related protections where applicable) to support appropriate customization.
Hour 3: Loss Settlement, Claims Handling, and Risk Management for Homes
- Review loss settlement basics (ACV vs. replacement cost, depreciation, and documentation expectations) to explain how claim payments are determined and why disputes arise.
- Discuss duties after loss, timelines, and communication practices to help agents coach policyholders on steps that protect both coverage and claim outcomes.
- Analyze common claim categories (hail, wind, roof, water, theft, liability) to connect policy language to practical scenarios and reduce overpromising at point of sale.
- Cover underwriting and loss prevention concepts (maintenance, roof age, property condition, security, mitigation, and inspection findings) to support better risk selection and fewer preventable losses.
Hour 4: Regional Market Realities, Coastal Windstorm Placement, and Compliance Expectations
- Review current homeowners market trends (rate pressure, tighter underwriting, higher deductibles, and coverage limitations) to keep agents current on what consumers are encountering.
- Explain coastal windstorm and last-resort placement concepts including when specialized windstorm coverage may apply and how to set expectations for coastal property owners.
- Evaluate catastrophe-driven exposures (hail frequency, convective storms, hurricane impacts, and rebuilding cost inflation) to strengthen conversations about limits, valuation, and resilience.
- Reinforce compliance and consumer-protection practices focusing on accurate representations, disclosure habits, documentation, and complaint prevention standards for property insurance sales.
