✅ Does This Course Satisfy the State Requirement?

This course provides 3 approved hours toward the 16 hours Virginia licensed resident insurance agents must complete. It does not satisfy the full requirement on its own, and it does not satisfy the separate 3-hour ethics requirement. You will need additional approved hours, including an approved ethics course, to complete your renewal.

If you hold more than one license category, your requirement is 24 hours rather than 16, with a minimum of eight hours in each category you hold. These 3 hours apply to the Property & Casualty category.

✅ Virginia Continuing Education Requirements

Under Virginia Code § 38.2-1866, an agent licensed in a single license category completes 16 hours of continuing education each biennium. An agent holding licenses in more than one category completes 24 hours, with a minimum of eight credit hours in each category held. Of the total required credits for each biennium, three credit hours must be in insurance ethics, which may include insurance law and regulations applicable in the Commonwealth.

  • 16 hours per biennium for a single license category
  • 24 hours per biennium for multiple categories, with at least 8 hours in each category held
  • 3 of the total credits must be in insurance ethics, which may include Virginia insurance law and regulations
  • No more than 75 percent of required credits may come from courses provided by insurance companies or agencies
  • Single categories include life and annuities, health, property and casualty, personal lines, and title

Virginia exempts agents licensed during the final 13 months of a two-year period from the requirement for that biennium, under § 38.2-1871. Nonresident agents who meet their home state's requirements and consultants who satisfy the requirement for each license category held are also addressed there. Check your own license record rather than assuming an exemption applies.

How this course helps: This 3-hour course contributes 3 of the 16 credit hours a single-category Virginia agent must complete each biennium, or 3 of the 24 hours required when you hold more than one category. It is approved in the Property & Casualty category, so those hours apply to a Property & Casualty license. It does not satisfy the separate 3-hour ethics requirement, and it does not complete the renewal by itself — the remaining hours and the ethics credits must be completed separately.

✅ When Do Licensees Renew?

Virginia agents renew on a two-year biennium. Confirm your own biennium end date on your license record or renewal notice rather than assuming a statewide calendar deadline. Because the requirement differs depending on how many license categories you hold, the first thing to establish is whether you are a 16-hour or a 24-hour agent — and if you hold more than one category, whether you have the eight-hour minimum in each. An agent who holds two categories and completes 24 hours all in one category has not met the requirement.

✅ How to Renew Your License

  1. Confirm how many license categories you hold — This determines whether you owe 16 hours or 24. If you hold more than one category, you also owe at least 8 hours in each.
  2. Check your biennium end date — Confirm it on your license record or renewal notice. Do not assume a statewide calendar deadline.
  3. Complete the required hours, including 3 in ethics — Ethics may include Virginia insurance law and regulations. Verify the ethics credits specifically.
  4. Watch the 75 percent sponsorship cap — No more than 75 percent of your required credits may come from courses provided by insurance companies or agencies. Independent provider courses are not subject to that cap.
  5. Allow provider reporting time — Finish coursework early enough for your completions to post before the biennium closes.
  6. Renew and confirm — Follow the renewal instructions in your notice, submit the renewal, and verify afterward that your record shows an active status and an updated expiration date.

✅ What You Will Learn

  • Identify cyber exposures — data breach, ransomware, social engineering, third-party liability — that fall outside traditional property and casualty policy intent
  • Explain what a cyber policy actually covers, including first-party response costs, business interruption concepts, sublimits, and waiting periods
  • Connect client security practices such as multifactor authentication, backups, patching, and vendor management to insurability and pricing
  • Spot the coverage gaps rideshare and on-demand delivery driving create in a personal auto policy, including app-on and app-off periods and livery exclusions
  • Determine which policy layer responds in a mixed-use driving loss, and what documentation supports a clean claim file
  • Explain how telematics, automated data enrichment, AI-assisted rating, and catastrophe trends are reshaping deductibles, exclusions, and underwriting appetite

✅ Course Content Overview

Hour 1: Cyber Liability Insurance Essentials for Modern Businesses

  • Introduce cyber exposures (data breach, ransomware, social engineering, and third-party liability) to explain why these losses often fall outside traditional P&C policy intent.
  • Review core cyber coverage parts (first-party response costs, business interruption concepts, and liability components) to clarify what is typically covered versus commonly excluded or limited.
  • Explain key cyber policy mechanics (incident reporting timing, panel vendor usage, sublimits, and waiting periods) to reduce misunderstandings that derail claim outcomes.
  • Discuss practical cyber underwriting and risk controls (MFA, backups, patching, employee training, and vendor management) to connect client behaviors to insurability and pricing.

Hour 2: Rideshare and On-Demand Delivery Coverage Gaps and Solutions

  • Define the on-demand economy exposure to show how “business use” can create coverage gaps when drivers transport people or goods under app-based platforms.
  • Review personal auto limitations and common gap points (app on/off periods, livery exclusions, and liability/physical damage uncertainties) to improve disclosure and suitability conversations.
  • Outline coverage solutions (rideshare endorsements and policy structures designed for delivery or mixed-use driving) to clarify how agents can reduce uninsured exposure.
  • Use scenario-based applications to determine which policy layer may respond (personal auto, endorsement, platform-related protection, or commercial coverage) and what documentation supports a clean claim file.

Hour 3: InsurTech Trends and Climate-Related Specialty Market Impacts

  • Review InsurTech and modern underwriting tools (telematics, automated data enrichment, AI-assisted rating, and digital claims) to explain how eligibility decisions and pricing are increasingly data-driven.
  • Discuss consumer and compliance considerations (data accuracy, transparency, privacy expectations, and documentation habits) to support ethical communication when underwriting outcomes change rapidly.
  • Evaluate climate-related risk pressures (hurricane, hail, wildfire, and flood impacts) to show how catastrophe trends influence deductibles, exclusions, underwriting appetite, and availability.
  • Introduce specialty placement concepts (private flood positioning at a high level, tightened terms, and client expectation-setting) to help agents explain market shifts without overpromising coverage.
