β Who Should Take This Course?
This course is written for employees who use or may be required to use respirators, and for the people who oversee respiratory protection at work, including:
- Workers who wear respirators in general industry, construction, and maintenance
- Employees exposed to dusts, fumes, mists, gases, vapors, or sprays
- Supervisors and foremen who direct respirator users
- Safety committee members and program administrators
- Employees enrolled in a voluntary respirator-use program
- New hires who need a foundational understanding before fit testing
β Does This Course Satisfy the OSHA Requirement?
This course is designed to support the training element required by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, including the content that must be delivered before respirator use and repeated annually. OSHA does not approve, certify, or license training providers or courses, so no course carries an OSHA approval number; instead, the employer is responsible for ensuring training meets the standard, and a certificate of completion from any provider is acceptable documentation.
Important: this awareness course supports the 1910.134 training element but does not replace the employer's written respiratory protection program, the required medical evaluation, or the required hands-on fit test. The medical evaluation and the fit test must be performed for each user before a respirator is worn in a hazardous atmosphere, and your employer must still provide the site-specific elements the standard requires.
β OSHA Training Requirements
The OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard, 29 CFR 1910.134, requires employers to establish a written program and to train each respirator user before initial use in the workplace and at least once a year thereafter. The training must be comprehensive and understandable and must cover why the respirator is needed, its limitations, how to use and maintain it, and the medical and fit-testing requirements.
- A written respiratory protection program administered by a designated program administrator
- A medical evaluation for each user before fit testing and use, under 1910.134(e)
- A fit test for each tight-fitting respirator before initial use and at least annually, under 1910.134(f)
- Training before initial use and annual retraining thereafter, under 1910.134(k)
- User seal checks each time a tight-fitting respirator is put on, under 1910.134(g)
- Employer maintains records of medical evaluations, fit tests, and the written program
How this course helps: This 2-hour awareness course is designed to deliver the classroom training content required by 29 CFR 1910.134(k), which must be provided before respirator use and repeated each year. It provides the general knowledge element of the standard; your employer supplies the written program, the medical evaluation, and the hands-on fit test that must be completed for each individual respirator user.
β How Often Is Retraining Required?
Respiratory protection training must be repeated at least once every year for as long as an employee is required to use a respirator. Retraining is also required when workplace conditions or the type of respirator changes, or when a worker shows inadequate knowledge or use. In addition, a fit test is required annually and whenever there are changes that affect the facepiece seal, such as significant weight change, facial or dental changes, or a different respirator model or size. Because both the training and the fit test are annual, many workers complete this course each year to stay current, and the employer keeps the completion certificate on file.
